History

familieFrom the Memorial House for the Swabian Skiing Association to today’s Schliffkopf Wellness & Nature Resort.

On 11th July 1931, the chairman of the promotions committee, Consul Erwin Klinger, laid the foundation stone for the Schliffkopf Memorial House for the Swabian Skiing Association. The House was inaugurated the following year at midday on 9th October. On behalf of the Swabian Skiing Association, Dr Maier, the then Economics Minister, handed over the running of the Memorial House to Berta and Christian Fahrner who had previously been tenant farmers. Together they ran the Memorial House until New Year’s Eve 1962. After running the House for 30 years, Chrisitan Fahrner handed over the reins to his son and daughter-in-law, Erich and Lore.

In 1974, Erich and Lore became owners of the property and in 1976 another inauguration was celebrated when Albert Finkbeiner, family friend and architect, completed extension work to the property, including room for 42 beds, a restaurant for hotel guests and a new kitchen. By 1980, another addition had been made and this one included an indoor swimming pool, sauna and activity area. Covering 3,500 m³, this extension was well received by guests and was a welcome addition to the hotel.
After 28 years at the helm, Lore and Erich Fahrner handed over the family business to their sons, Erich and Heiko, who today are successfully running the hotel together with their wives Doreen and Beate.

A lot has happened since 1991. Fire broke out overnight on 17th October 1991 and the hotel was completely destroyed.
The life’s work of three generations of the Fahrner family had been wiped out. It was not until October 1994 that the Fahrners could resume their 59-year old family tradition of offering hospitality on the mountainside.

With a lot of courage, entrepreneurial spirit and skill, the family has created a hotel that exudes the very essence of well-being.
In 2003, Erich and Heiko Fahrner undertook further building projects that were to give a new direction to the hotel. After 12 months, a three-storey wellness house with specially equipped treatment rooms and exclusive wellness suites had been constructed. In addition, the swimming pool and sauna area had been remodelled and an outdoor heated swimming pool installed.

This 4 Star Superior Hotel is now one of Germany’s most renowned Wellness Hotels and was recently awarded 5 Wellness Stars by the Federal State of Baden-Würrtemberg.
