The Lothar Path
The Lothar Path – Let Nature Work its Magic!
On Boxing Day 1999, Hurricane Lothar brought down 30 million cubic tonnes of wood in two hours and the northern Black Forest Region found itself the hardest hit.
What was economic disaster for local residents quickly turned into an opportunity for a multitude of plants and animals. Today, years after the storm, there are new and interesting developments occurring even in the woods and storm areas.
From the B500 (the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse tourist route) near the Schliffkopf, there is an area the size of 10 football pitches where you can see this process in action. The Lothar Path gives you the chance of experiencing the excitement of the natural world. This simple, unassuming 1 kilometre stretch will lead you over small wooden bridges, footpaths and stiles into a patch of woodland, which was left uncleared after the hurricane.
Take a Walk on the Wild Side
Don’t forget to wear a pair of good shoes for your walk along the Lothar Path and remember to take warm, waterproof clothing with you.
The Lothar Path is a scheme organised by the Nature Conservancy Centre in Ruhestein and the State Forestry Office in Baiersbronn.
A team of biologists and foresters are on hand at the Nature Conservancy Centre to arrange guided walks and to answer any questions or queries you may have.
